The government of Cyprus has confirmed that four Greek F-16 fighter jets have arrived on the island, following a request to Athens.
“Four Hellenic Air Force F-16 jets have just landed in Cyprus, following an immediate response from the Greek government, in the context of strengthening precautionary measures and close cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and Greece,” said Cypriot government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis in a post on X.
Earlier, Athens announced it would send two frigates and two F-16 fighter jets to the island as security concerns escalate.
“After the unprovoked attacks on Cypriot territory, Greece will contribute in every possible way to the defense of the Republic of Cyprus to address threats and illegal actions occurring in its territory,” said Defense Minister Nikos Dendias.
The response from Athens came after a Royal Air Force base on British territory in Cyprus was struck by an Iranian-made drone.
Iran has warned of an escalation of missile attacks on Cyprus, claiming that the United States has significantly expanded its military influence on the island.
